RWI Phonics
Read Write Inc. and Early Reading at Hughenden Primary School
At Hughenden Primary School, we believe that reading is the key to unlocking a lifetime of learning. Our aim is for every child to become a fluent, confident reader who develops a genuine love of books and reading.
Children who read regularly, or who are read to regularly, are exposed to new ideas, experiences and opportunities. Reading not only supports academic success across the curriculum but also helps children develop imagination, curiosity and independence.
We achieve this through:
- Delivering high-quality Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics teaching to support early reading and writing.
- Reading to children every day and promoting a love of stories, books and language.
- Providing access to a wide range of high-quality texts in classrooms, our library and at home.
- Working closely with parents and carers to support reading development beyond the classroom.
Our Phonics Approach
At Hughenden Primary School, we use Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI) to give children the best possible start in reading and writing.
Phonics teaches children to recognise sounds, blend sounds together to read words and develop the skills needed to become confident, independent readers. Read Write Inc. is a nationally recognised programme that provides a structured and highly effective approach to early literacy.
Children are taught in targeted groups, allowing teaching to be closely matched to their stage of phonics development. They are regularly assessed and regrouped when appropriate, ensuring that every child receives the right level of challenge and support to make strong progress.
Our goal is that all children develop the confidence, fluency and comprehension skills they need to become enthusiastic, lifelong readers.
