Curriculum & learning
the Curriculum
At Hughenden Primary School, we are ambitious for every child. We believe that all pupils can succeed and flourish through a curriculum that is engaging, inclusive and carefully sequenced. Our aim is that every child leaves Year 6 with the knowledge, skills, confidence and character needed to thrive at secondary school and beyond.
Rooted in our values and driven by high expectations, our curriculum is designed to nurture curious minds, foster a love of learning and enable every child to achieve their full potential, regardless of their starting point.
If you would like further information about our curriculum, please contact the school office. Further information can also be found throughout this website and on the subject-specific curriculum pages.
Our Curriculum
At Hughenden Primary School, we follow the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework. Children are taught in year groups and benefit from high-quality teaching across all subjects.
The National Curriculum includes the core subjects of:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
and the foundation subjects of:
- Art and Design
- Computing
- Design and Technology
- Geography
- History
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Music
- Physical Education
Learning is carefully planned to build knowledge and skills over time, ensuring children make strong progress throughout their primary education. Teachers continually assess learning to identify strengths, address misconceptions and ensure all pupils are appropriately supported and challenged.
National Assessments
Pupils take part in a number of statutory assessments during their time at primary school:
- Reception children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals.
- Year 1 pupils complete the Phonics Screening Check.
- Year 4 pupils complete the Multiplication Tables Check.
- Year 6 pupils undertake the Key Stage 2 SATs assessments.
Alongside these national assessments, teacher assessment provides a comprehensive picture of each child's attainment, progress and development throughout the year.
Curriculum Intent
At Hughenden Primary School, we are committed to providing a curriculum that is nurturing, ambitious and connected.
Our curriculum is built upon our C.H.E.E.R. values:
Cooperation, Honesty, Enthusiasm, Empathy and Respect
These values underpin every aspect of school life and help us develop children who are not only successful learners but also responsible, respectful and confident citizens.
We believe that children learn best when they can make meaningful connections between different areas of knowledge. Our curriculum therefore combines strong subject-specific teaching with purposeful opportunities for cross-curricular learning, helping pupils to understand how their learning relates to the wider world.
Our curriculum is designed to:
- Develop secure knowledge and skills across all subjects.
- Promote high achievement for every child.
- Foster creativity, curiosity and resilience.
- Support pupils' emotional wellbeing and personal development.
- Celebrate diversity, inclusion and belonging.
- Build understanding of local, national and global communities.
- Develop environmental responsibility and sustainability awareness.
- Prepare children for the next stage of their education and future life opportunities.
We work closely with families, local organisations and the wider community to enrich learning experiences and ensure our curriculum remains relevant, engaging and meaningful. Together, we strive to nurture minds and empower lives.
Curriculum Implementation
Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure progression from the Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2.
Learning is organised through clear long-term plans that identify the essential knowledge, vocabulary and skills pupils need to acquire in each subject. Subject leaders work collaboratively with teachers to ensure progression builds year upon year and that learning is appropriately sequenced across all phases of the school.
Teachers use their professional expertise to adapt learning to meet the needs of their classes while maintaining consistently high expectations for all pupils. Lessons are designed to:
- Build on prior learning.
- Deepen understanding over time.
- Develop and apply subject-specific vocabulary.
- Challenge pupils to think critically and creatively.
- Make meaningful links across subjects where appropriate.
- Promote independence and resilience.
We enhance classroom learning through:
- Educational visits and residential experiences.
- Visiting speakers and experts.
- Community projects and partnerships.
- Outdoor learning opportunities.
- Cultural and enrichment activities.
These experiences broaden horizons, enrich understanding and help pupils develop empathy, confidence and a sense of belonging within an increasingly diverse world.
